World: MSc Disaster Healthcare

Course aims
The course aims to prepare healthcare professionals and practitioners and those who support healthcare delivery, or those who aspire to do so, to deliver healthcare to vulnerable populations across the disaster cycle. There is a strong emphasis on international humanitarian assistance throughout the programme. This focus is balanced with considerations of national disaster risk reduction and response, and the growing role of defence medical services in disaster planning and response.

Course structure
Three years part-time distance learning study with three year-specific summer schools.

Year 1

  • Principles and Concepts in Disasters
  • Public Health in Disasters 1

Year 2

  • August summer school
  • Public Health in Disasters 2
  • Planning for Civil Contingencies and Disasters
  • Evidence Based Practice in Disasters

Year 3

  • August summer school
  • Researching and Evaluating Disasters
  • Work-based learning/practice placement

Teaching and learning

On-line learning is delivered through web-based virtual learning environment that provides access to reading materials, audiovisual material, group interactive learning exercises and real-time on-line face-to-face tutorials. The teaching faculty have expertise and field experience in international humanitarian operations, civil contingency planning and emergency response, and military healthcare. The subject expertise of the teaching faculty includes maternal and child health, nutrition, WASH, mental health aspects of disasters, infectious disease outbreak control, epidemiology, research and evaluation, leadership and planning in emergencies, healthcare ethics and IHL, and personal and professional preparation for austere environments.
